Western Saddle Terminology & Definitions

Swell (Fork or Pommel) – The front part of the saddle that rises up to support the front of the rider and connect to the horn.

Horn – A vertical knob mounted on the swell, used for roping cattle and providing hand support.

Seat – The part where the rider sits; shaped for comfort and support.

Cantle – The raised, curved part at the back of the seat that provides back support.

Skirts – The large leather pieces beneath the seat that protect the horse’s back from direct contact with saddle rigging.

Fenders – The wide leather panels that hang down on either side of the saddle, connecting the seat to the stirrups.

Stirrups – The footrests attached to the fenders; they provide balance and control for the rider.

Latigo – A long strap used to secure the cinch (girth) on the left side of the saddle.

Cinch (Girth) – The strap that goes under the horse’s belly to hold the saddle in place.

Off Billet – The strap on the right side of the saddle used in conjunction with the latigo to secure the cinch.

D-rings – Metal rings used for attaching cinches, breast collars, saddle bags, or other tack.

Saddle Strings – Leather ties used for attaching gear like saddle bags, ropes, or bedrolls.

Back Cinch (Flank Cinch) – An additional cinch that goes around the back of the horse’s belly to prevent the saddle from lifting at the rear.

Jockeys (Seat and Side Jockeys) – Leather panels covering the stirrup leathers and rigging beneath the saddle for protection and style.

Rigging – The hardware and leather straps that hold the cinch in place; can be full, 7/8, or 3/4 depending on placement.

Tree – The internal frame of the saddle, usually made of wood or fiberglass, that determines the saddle’s shape and strength.

Gullet – The tunnel under the saddle that sits over the horse’s spine and withers, allowing spinal clearance.

Conchos – Decorative metal pieces often used to secure saddle strings and add western flair.

Breast Collar Dee – A metal ring or loop used to attach a breast collar that keeps the saddle from sliding backward.

Cheyenne Roll – A type of cantle style that rolls slightly outward, often seen on working saddles for added comfort.

Tooling – The decorative carved or stamped patterns in the leather for aesthetic appeal.
